A revised key to the subfamilies, tribes and subtribes of the Cetoniidae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea) is presented. Comments are given on the classification implied by the key, which includes several redefinitions. All the known genera (ca. 510) are listed under their tribe or subtribe, the position of several being different from that in Schenkling's catalogues (1921, 1922). References to recent synoptic literature are given. Eighteen new subtribes are proposed, the majority in the tribe Cremastocheilini. One new tribe is proposed, the Platygeniini. Attention is drawn to various new and neglected synonymies, original spellings, and other nomenclatural matters regarding family-group and genus-group names. The position of many genera is briefly discussed.... |

The scarab fauna of dung from Dutch red deer and wild boar is recorded and discussed. Dung samples collected during four visits to the forested region South of Apeldoorn were extracted and numbers per species were counted (table 1). The samples contained one species new to the Netherlands (Aphodius zenkeri Germar), three species considered rare (A. maculatus Sturm, A. fasciatus Olivier, A. lividus Olivier), as well as 21 more common scarab species. Further Dutch records of these species and of A. corvinus Erichson are added. The distribution of these species and of some absent from the list is briefly discussed. A. zenkeri, maculatus, and fasciatus are thought to frequent shaded habitats because of a restricted drought tolerance. |

Seven species of the scarab genus Onthophagus Latreille are keyed and described. They are all characterized by the possession of large eyes (in full-face view), a feature possibly related to nocturnal habits. Traditionally these species are placed in Micronthophagus Balthasar, which is here argued to be a polyphyletic group. Five species are new: paroculus (Sumatra), setoculus (Sumatra), sideki (Sumatra, Borneo), phillippsorum (Borneo), collinsi (Borneo). Of two old species, O. drescheri Paulian and rotundicollis Lansberge, new records are given. |

Two new genera, endemic in southwestern Africa, are diagnosed: Prototrupes, for Bolboceras copridoides Kolbe (type-species) and Bolboceras kochi Paulian; Namibiotrupes for Namibiotrupes penrithae sp. nov. The species of Prototrupes are keyed, illustrated, and some new material is recorded. Namibiotrupes penrithae from the Namib Desert Park is described and illustrated. The two genera are characterized by enlarged antennal clubs. |

Centrochilus howdeni gen. nov., sp. nov. (Mexico) is described and illustrated. Cyclidinus velutinus Westwood, the distribution of which appears to be Neotropical, is accommodated in Cyclidiellus gen. nov. A brief revised key to the New World genera of Cremastocheilini is given; Uloptera Burmeister is excluded, being Ethiopian, the new genera and the neglected Cyclidinus Westwood are included. |

Onitini collected in East Africa (mainly southeastern Kenya) are discussed. The distribution of onitine species over Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Tsavo National Park is reviewed (table 1). Three new species and one new subspecies are described and illustrated, viz., Onitis bispicticollis, kingstoni, pseudojansenii, sulcipennis subsp. naromorus (all from Kenya). For species described from other parts of Africa lectotypes are designated, viz., Onitis obscurus Lansberge, vanderkelleni Lansberge, vethi Lansberge (junior synonym of fabricii Roth), westermanni Lansberge. Onitis decellei Frey is a junior synonym of 0. violaceus Lansberge and a junior homonym of 0. decellei Paulian (junior synonym of viridulus Reiche). Further notes concern identification,... |

A key to the Asian cremastochiliform genera is given. Three synonymies are emphasized: Clinterocera Motschulsky (= Callynomes Westwood); Campsiura Hope (= Macroma Gory & Percheron); Spilophorus Schaum (= Pseudospilophorus Kraatz). A new synonymy is: Periphanesthes Kraatz (= Bonsiella Ruter). The authorship of one species is established: Praona niveosparsa (Mohnike). The publication dates of Westwood's Thesaurus Entomologicus Oxoniensis are discussed. The type-material of the Leiden museum is listed; six lectotypes are designated. Two new species are described and illustrated: Campsiura celebensis (Sulawesi) and Parapilinurgus hiekei (Assam). |
